Wayfinding: Primary Research

I visited Leeds City Museum and the Henry Moore Institute to see what wayfinding systems they have in place and to take some pictures that I could use to mock up with my own branding.

The Leeds City Museum is well sign posted around the perimeter of the museum with clear direction indicators for visitors.

There is also a smaller sign with opening times and featured exhibitions

The Audience for the City Museum is mainly families with children, this is reflected in the branding and signage they use. The use of multiple colours gives this impression in comparison with the very basic and monochromatic identity of the Art Gallery

The lack of colour in the identity of the Henry Moore institute instantly gives it a higher class and sophistication of audience.:

Medium sized wall signs are placed frequently throughout the museum which make navigation around the museum easy.

These larger signs are placed at the start of each floor to give you a quick overview of where everything is in relation to your current position.

Within exhibitions there are a lot of signs that follow the same colour scheme and style to give information about the individual displays.

I could use floor vinyls like this on the bottom level of my museum as it is more suited to a younger audience and interactivity:

These knee heigh signs are effective at giving quick and clear information as you are walking around:

Overall I thought that the way finding for Leeds City Museum was relatively minimal as it just has, essentially the same, signs in different formats around the museum

The overall identity and aesthetic of the Henry Moore institute is more muted and minimal:

Because this gallery follows quite a linear way of walking around it there isn't very much signage, just the essential directions for main rooms/ attached buildings.

Signage for associated buildings/ amenities is something I could add onto the Identity of theType Factory:

These flag signs are very effective for communicating the location of things from a distance:

I will use the Henry Moore institute as the hypothetical location for the Type Factory:
