1.Modernity & Modernism Lecture notes





  • 1860-mid 20th century
  • The city becomes a more integral part of everyday life. Lots of people in a small area forces alienation and loneliness that is reflected in artwork and design.
  • New technological advances change what is considered art. The invention of the camera influences the way artists paint.
  • The experience of the individual in the modern world is 'modernity'
  • Design is looking forward not taking influence from past design.
  • Form follows function
  • Modernism neglected the needs of the individual and focussed on the mass population.
  • Anti-realism- the invention of the camera forced artists to become more abstract and expressionist.
