Graffiti/ street art x 5 designers

Graffiti/ street art is art that is in a public space, it sometimes has a social or political comment to make or it is one graffiti artist marking his territory.

Ben Flynn, a.k.a. EINE, shot to international fame when David Cameron presented one of his works to President Obama as a gift on his first official state visit, but is arguably more famous for ‘Alphabet Street’ – the shutters and murals he painted in his trademark colours and typography in Middlesex Street, London– described by The Times as “a street now internationally recognized as a living piece of art with direct links to The White House.”

David Eine heavily uses big scale typography in his work which heavily references Graphic Design.

Shepard Fairey   http://obeygiant.com/

Sheperd Fairey is the obvious link between grafitti an graphic design, Fairey began as a street artist and became famous for his Andre the giant stencil graffiti, he now mainly does screen based work, doing the recent presidential campaign for Obama

Nico 189     http://www.nico189.com/

I'm an Italian graphic designer and graffiti writer.
I started to paint in '97, after a few years my passion for lettering led me to study the type and graphic design in Milan, where I currently live and work. I enjoy exploring and experimenting with geometric shapes and typography.

Nico 189 also dabbles in both graffiti and graphic design. His graffiti style doesn't influence his graphic design as much as you might think, His graffiti is very typical of 1980's new york style with a modern edge, his graphic design references some elements of graffiti but only subtly- stencil lettering/ decorative typography.

As One    http://www.asone.co.uk/

As One uses the aesthetics of graffiti to influence digital typography and graphic design using bold colours and vivid, flowing lines the link between both disciplines is  apparent.

Niels Shoe Meulman       http://www.nielsshoemeulman.com/

Born in Amsterdam in 1967, Niels Meulman is an internationally known artist, designer, and art director. Meulman began tagging in 1979 and became a graffiti legend by the time he was 18. Known as ‘Shoe’ within the graffiti community, his work evolved into a business for lettering and he furthered his technique by apprenticing under the Dutch graphic design master, Anthon Beeke.
