The fragrances that are being sold by L'artisan Parfumer are:
Scent a: Passion and desire. Sex and
lust. Raw and physical.
Scent b: Perfect, sublime love. An interior emotion.
Scent c: Excitement and fear.
Adrenaline, exhilaration and thrill.
Scent d: Elegant and dignified. Stormy yet still.
As the company is trying to sell a physical, chemical change in the user we are going to research the changes that happen in a human when experiencing the above stimuli.
We have split the research of these topics down the middle so I will look into fear & adrenaline and Scent d which may take some defining.
Scent C: Fear and Thrill
Fear:
Noun
An unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat.
The most appropriate part of this description to research is Adrenaline as this is what the company want the user to experience rather than them to fear or be feared.
"Epinephrine (also known as adrenaline or adrenalin) is a hormone and a neurotransmitter.[1] Epinephrine has many functions in the body, regulating heart rate, blood vessel and air passage diameters, and metabolic shifts; epinephrine release is a crucial component of the fight-or-flight response of the sympathetic nervous system.[2] In chemical terms, epinephrine is one of a group of monoamines called the catecholamines. It is produced in some neurons of the central nervous system, and in the chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla from the amino acids phenylalanine and tyrosine.[3]"
The chemical structure of the hormones that function could be used in the visual identity and packaging of the perfume.
The only way to induce Adrenaline without actually doing something that is scary or fast paced is to inject Epinephrine into your blood which is only available through medical attention.
Chemical benefits of Adrenaline:
- Dilates blood and opens air passages
- Adrenaline is used to override your physical barriers and limitations.
- Adrenaline, also known asepinephrine, was the first hormone to be identified.
Scent D: Elegant and Dignified
This is the odd one out for the fragrances as they don't liken it to any emotion they just say that is is, "Elegant and dignified, stormy yet still". In comparison to the other emotions this is the most relaxed and nonchalant. As this emotion isn't really covered by the main neurotransmitters I think that Glutamate is closest to the chemical effect that they are trying to achieve. "Glutamate is also used by the brain to synthesise GABA (γ-Aminobutyric acid), the main inhibitory neurotransmitter of the mammalian central nervous system, which plays a role in regulating neuronal excitability throughout the nervous system and is also directly responsible for the regulation of muscle tone in humans."
Regulating Excitability relates to elegance and dignity and regulating muscle tone relates to the 'Stormy yet still' description that we have been given with the brief.
Glutamate also plays a large part within the brain for learning and memory which are aspects that aren't covered by the other 3 scents.
